Cockfighting in Javanese Muslim Society during the Nineteenth and the Early Twentieth Century

This study aims to analyze the thoughts of Javanese Muslims on cockfighting in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It has been a custom culture since humans domesticated chickens. At first, it had sacred connotation. eventually devolved into profane gamble. Although Islam banned animals fighting gambling, tradition continued during Islamic era. examines (1) reasons why Muslim enjoys cockfighting, (2) forms thought about manuscripts from centuries, (3) its influence colonial royal rule Java. Research showed that some normalized cockfight but viewed game as an evil deed
